How to Align Safety Reversing Sensors

Garage Door Services provides the following information to help you resolve issues with your garage door not opening or closing properly. For further information, be sure to contact our experienced staff in Traverse City, MI.

If your garage door opener will not close from your remote control, and the opener light(s) are flashing, verify if your safety reversing sensors are installed, not obstructed, or out of alignment.

NOTE: Any garage door opener or replacement logic board manufactured after February 3, 2022, will no longer have this feature.

  • If they're not installed, refer to your owner's manual for installation steps
  • If obstructed, remove the obstruction, and the opener will resume normal operation
  • If one of the safety sensors LEDs is off or flashing, follow the steps below to realign your safety sensors

For our newest safety reversing sensors 041-0136 released in 2021, look for the following identifiers:

  • A square LED light
  • A hole through the sensor for the mounting bolt
  • A sticker on the back of the receiving (green LED) sensor

Align the Safety Reversing Sensors

Follow the steps below to align your safety sensors:

  1. Locate both safety reversing sensors located on each side of the garage door, usually fastened to the door tracks, no higher than 6 inches above the garage floor
  2. Loosen the wing nut on the front of the receiving sensor (green LED) then align the sensor so both lenses are pointed at each other. When the receiving sensor LED glows steadily, tighten the wing nut
  3. Once both of the safety reversing sensor LEDs are glowing steadily, the garage door will resume normal operation
  4. Test by using your remote control or door control to close the garage door

Garage Door Opener Diagnostic Codes for Safety Sensor Issues

  • On a Security+ 2.0 garage door opener, the up arrow will flash 4 times followed by the down arrow flashing 6 times. This indicates the sensors are misaligned or obstructed (see Diagnostic Codes for Garage Doors with UP and DOWN Adjustment Arrows for more help)
  • On a Security+ 2.0 garage door opener with an LCD display, the LCD display will show "Error code 4-6 sensor momentarily obstructed" to indicate the sensors are misaligned or obstructed
  • On other garage door openers, the learn button will flash 4 times every 10 seconds, indicating the sensors are misaligned or obstructed (see Diagnostic Codes for Garage Door Openers for more help)

If you experience additional issues with safety reversing sensors, see How to Troubleshoot the Safety Reversing Sensors When One LED is Off or Flickering or How to Troubleshoot the Safety Reversing Sensors When Both LEDs are Not Lit.

Diagnosing Issues With 41-0136 Safety Sensors

  • If both sensor LEDs are off, it is a wiring issue with the sending sensor (amber LED)
  • When both sensor LEDs are off the receiving sensor is identified by a sticker on the back of the sensor
  • If the amber LED is on but the green LED is off, it is a wiring issue with the receiving sensor (green LED)
  • If the green LED is blinking, there is either an obstruction of the 2 sensors or the sensors are out of alignment

NOTE: If both sensor LEDs are on solid, they are aligned and working properly
